Smudging 101


  • Definition:

    • Purifying a room with the smoke of sacred herbs
  • Purpose:

    • To clear a space of negative energy
  • Most Common Herb To Burn:

    • White Sage


 1. Prepare The Space


  • Time to set aside: 10-15 minutes
  • Gather materials
  • Declutter, tidy, and clean
  • Open windows to encourage movement and fresh air flow

2. State Your Intention


  • Choose a prayer or saying to repeat during the ceremony
  • Repeat this intention out loud as you move through the house
  • Examples:
    • “Into this smoke, I release all energies that no longer serve me, all negativity that surrounds me, and all fears that limit me. So it is.”
    • “Smoke of Air and Fire of Earth. Cleanse and bless this home and hearth. Drive away all harm and fear; only good may enter here.”
    • “Bless this house, May peace dwell within. Protect all that enter, whether friend or kin.”

3. Light It Up


  • Strike a match
  • Light the end of the herbs
  • Allow smoke to billow
  • Blow out the flame

4. Move About Your House


  • Place the abalone shell under smudge stick to catch ashes
  • Carry the smudge stick from room to room
  • Move clockwise around each room
  • Repeat your intention
  • Cover all corners of each room, top to bottom
  • Use the feather to waft smoke into all nooks and crannies

5. Extinguish The End Of The Herbs


  • Options:
    • Allow the spark to run out
    • Run under or dip into water
  • Optional: Some people like to follow this ceremony with a cleansing spray
