Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic therapy intended to increase oral health. The idea is that the oil will draw out some of the toxins and bad bacteria living in the mouth. While this practice is not supported by science, many people believe strongly in its benefits, and have for over 3,000 years.
- protects the mouth from unfriendly bacteria & harmful toxins
- freshens breath
- Some of chemicals and gases that these bacteria produce can cause halitosis, more commonly known as “bad breath.”
- prevents disease, headaches & migraines
- Removes Plaque
- whitens teeth
- prevents cavities
- Improves Skin
- clears acne
- reduces inflammation
- cracked lips
- bleeding gums
Swish 1 Tbsp. of oil in your mouth for up to 20 minutes.
Several different types of oil are used, including sesame and sunflower oil. I prefer coconut oil, which currently seems to hold the popular vote.
The ideal time to incorporate this practice into your life is during your morning routine. It is best to do so on an empty stomach, before you’ve had anything to eat or drink that day.
After twenty minutes (or when you’ve had enough), spit the oil into a trash can. You don’t want to swallow it since it is now containing all of the toxins that you intended to get rid of.
