While letting go is what vacation is all about, there are a few easy tips that you can follow to make sure that you don’t let yourself go, as well. A healthy lifestyle is all about balance. Enjoying a well-deserved vacation is the perfect medicine to many of life’s ailments. Keeping these four easy tips in mind will allow you to return to the real world refreshed and rejuvenated. It feels good to arrive home without feeling like you need a vacation from your vacation.

1. Hydrate

Airplanes are extremely dehydrating. Be sure to buy a water bottle once you’ve gotten through security to bring with you on the plane. I like to bring my own empty BPA-free bottle in my carry-on, to refill at the gate. Get ahead of dehydration by taking small sips throughout your travels.

Keep H20 On Hand

Keep a water bottle on hand for the duration of your trip and take little sips throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Once you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Try to steer clear of sugary and caffeinated drinks, as these do more harm than good. Staying hydrated also prevents your body for mistaking thirst for hunger.

2. Locals Know Best

Meet a few locals if you can. This is a great way to connect with the culture of wherever you may be visiting. See if your concierge (Siri?) can recommend a farmer’s market in the area. Stock up on some fresh produce and protein sources, such as nuts, to keep on hand for snacking on-the-go and in the room.

 When In Rome…

Try new things if given the opportunity. Exotic fruits and vegetables in their home of origin are always sweet treats that I look forward to, in each place I visit.

While home cooking is typically out of the question on vacation, you can still make great dining choices. Checking out the available options nearby has never been easier, with plenty of apps and review websites always just a swipe away. When ordering, opt for a colorful plate, brimming with fresh vegetables and lean protein.

3. Move

When pre-booking excursions, be mindful of how you want to feel during, & after. This is your vacation; all the more reason to prioritize take care of numero uno (yourself, duh). Truth be told, keeping movement in mind more often than not leads to a great time – no, laps around the cruise deck is not my kind of party either.

For destinations focused around sight-seeing, opt for a bike tour vs. bus. Heading to the beach? More often than not, looking back on photos, you won’t regret booking a scuba diving adventure over a booze cruise. If you use a tracking device, make sure to pack it & try to reach a daily goal that works for you.

Remember Newton’s first law of motion: an object at rest stays at rest.

“An object in motion stays in motion."

Make the right choices and let momentum drive you forward.

Sleep On It

Regardless of the destination, sleep is critical in leading a healthy lifestyle. With the hustle and bustle of “so much to do in so little time", rest is often be pushed aside. Scheduling some shut eye amidst other travel plans will keep your immunity, energy, and spirits high; allowing you to make the most out of the trip.  Try your best to get the recommend 7-9 hours of sleep per night that you deserve.  Noise-cancelling headphones and a good eye mask are life-savers when I’m trying to sneak a snooze into my travels.
